EQUIS Accreditation Support Services

EQUIS, EFMD’s international accreditation for business schools, assesses quality across ten dimensions—with a distinctive emphasis on internationalisation and connections with the corporate world. MAS Research supports schools with the readiness assessment, research analytics, benchmarking, and evidence a strong self-assessment requires; the accreditation itself rests with EFMD.

EQUIS accreditation support helps a business school prepare the evidence, analysis, and documentation for EFMD’s EQUIS accreditation. It covers readiness and gap assessment, internationalisation and corporate-engagement evidence, faculty-research analytics, programme and impact analysis, and benchmarking against the ten chapters of the EQUIS Standards & Criteria. The accreditation itself is granted by EFMD through its independent peer-review process, not by any support provider.

What is EQUIS accreditation?

EQUIS—the EFMD Quality Improvement System—is an international system of strategic review, quality improvement, and accreditation for business schools, run by EFMD Global (headquartered in Brussels). Launched in 1997, it was designed as a deliberately international construct: rather than imposing a single national model, it combines commonly agreed standards with respect for the diversity of the educational and cultural contexts in which schools operate. It assesses the school as a whole institution, not individual programmes.

EQUIS is distinguished by two emphases that run throughout its framework: internationalisation (an international orientation in strategy, faculty, students, programmes, and partnerships) and connections with the corporate world (meaningful engagement with practice, employers, and external stakeholders). Assessment is organised around the EQUIS Standards & Criteria, structured in ten chapters covering areas such as context, strategy and governance; programmes; students; faculty; research and development; executive education; contribution to the community; internationalisation; ethics, responsibility and sustainability; and connections with practice. EFMD revises this documentation periodically—most recently, for example, the research standard was substantially rewritten in a 2024 update—so schools are expected always to use the latest official version.

How MAS Research supports—and what remains EFMD’s

As with any accreditation, scope must be clear. MAS Research is not EFMD, is not an accrediting body, and is not an official EQUIS or EFMD partner or endorser. We do not award accreditation, sit on peer-review teams, or influence accreditation decisions. What we provide is research, analytical, advisory, and documentation support—helping a school assess readiness, analyse its research and internationalisation, benchmark against peers, and organise the evidence its self-assessment relies on.

The two workflows are distinct. EFMD’s official EQUIS process—eligibility, the Self-Assessment Report against the ten chapters, the peer-review visit, and the Accreditation Board’s decision (with three-year or five-year outcomes)—is run entirely by EFMD and its international peer reviewers. MAS Research’s support workflow runs alongside it, strengthening the analytical and evidentiary foundations a school brings. We are transparent about this boundary and make no guarantee of any accreditation outcome, because that decision is EFMD’s.

Internationalisation & corporate engagement support

Internationalisation is one of EQUIS’s signature emphases. A school is assessed on the international dimension running through its strategy, its faculty and student profile, its programmes, and its partnerships and mobility. This is inherently an evidence question—demonstrating international orientation requires data, not assertion. We support it by analysing and structuring internationalisation evidence and by benchmarking a school’s international profile against relevant peers, so the self-assessment can show the international character of the institution clearly.

Corporate engagement and external stakeholders form the other distinctive emphasis. EQUIS looks for genuine connections with the corporate world—employer relationships, industry partnerships, executive education where relevant, and demonstrable external impact. We help schools structure and analyse the evidence of these connections and their impact, and benchmark engagement against peers, again as analytical and evidentiary support rather than as a substitute for the relationships and activities themselves, which belong to the school.

Support is analytical, not decisional. MAS Research helps analyse and evidence research, internationalisation, and corporate engagement—it does not set institutional strategy, and it does not award or guarantee accreditation. The EQUIS decision is made independently by EFMD’s Accreditation Board.

Faculty & research

EQUIS assesses faculty and their research contributions, and EFMD’s recent updates have sharpened the research standard’s focus. We support this with research-productivity and citation analytics, faculty-research profiling, and benchmarking of publications and impact—including the international dimension of research—against relevant peers. We align these analyses to the current EQUIS framework and terminology, and verify how a measure relates to the criteria rather than asserting formal requirements.

How we work

Our EQUIS support workflow

This is MAS Research’s support workflow, run alongside—and clearly distinct from—EFMD’s official EQUIS process. It draws on our institutional research, bibliometrics, and benchmarking practices.

We begin with an initial consultation to understand the school’s strategy, international profile, and goals, followed by a readiness and gap assessment against the current EQUIS Standards & Criteria. We then map the evidence and data the Self-Assessment Report will draw on, conduct the analysis and benchmarking (research, internationalisation, corporate engagement, programmes, KPIs), and provide documentation support—organising findings into clear evidence tables and reports.

Engagement continues through review and refinement and, where the school wishes, continuous-improvement support across the accreditation cycle. Throughout, we are explicit that the Self-Assessment Report, the peer-review visit, and the accreditation decision belong to the school and EFMD; our role is the analytical and evidentiary groundwork beneath them.

Institutions we support

EQUIS accredits a wide range of institutions—from private business schools focused on postgraduate and executive education to public university faculties of management with broad programme portfolios. We work across that range, in international and multi-campus contexts, tailoring support to each school’s strategy and international character rather than a fixed template.

Questions we help institutions answer

Where are our evidence gaps against the EQUIS chapters? How does our research and international profile compare with peers? How can internationalisation be evidenced with data? How can corporate-engagement impact be structured and analysed? How can institutional KPIs be benchmarked and monitored across the accreditation cycle?

FAQ

EQUIS accreditation support: common questions

EQUIS (the EFMD Quality Improvement System) is an international accreditation for business schools, run by EFMD Global in Brussels. It assesses the school as a whole institution against the EQUIS Standards & Criteria, with a distinctive emphasis on internationalisation and connections with the corporate world, and combines common standards with respect for the diversity of national and cultural contexts.
In broad terms, an eligible school prepares a Self-Assessment Report against the ten chapters of the EQUIS Standards & Criteria, hosts a peer-review visit by a team of international evaluators, and receives a decision from EFMD’s Accreditation Board—with three-year or five-year accreditation outcomes and ongoing improvement expectations. This is EFMD’s official process; MAS Research supports the analysis and evidence a school brings to it. Schools should confirm current process details with official EFMD sources.
EQUIS assesses the whole institution across the ten chapters of its Standards & Criteria—covering areas such as context, strategy and governance; programmes; students; faculty; research and development; executive education; contribution to the community; internationalisation; ethics, responsibility and sustainability; and connections with practice. Internationalisation and corporate connections are recurring emphases. EFMD updates the documentation periodically, so schools should use the latest official version.
The Self-Assessment Report is the document a school prepares, aligned with the ten chapters of the EQUIS Standards & Criteria, describing and evidencing its quality against each area ahead of the peer-review visit. It is an evidence-intensive exercise. MAS Research supports the underlying analysis, benchmarking, and evidence organisation that inform it; the report itself is authored and owned by the school.
Yes. Because internationalisation and corporate connections are central EQUIS emphases, we help schools analyse and structure the relevant evidence—international-profile data, partnership and mobility metrics, employer and stakeholder engagement, and their impact—and benchmark these against peers. This is analytical and evidentiary support; the international activities and corporate relationships themselves belong to the school.
Yes. A readiness (gap) assessment reviews a school’s current position against the EQUIS Standards & Criteria, identifies where evidence is missing or weak across the chapters, and sets out what would need to be developed or analysed—giving the school a clear, honest picture before committing to the wider preparation effort. It is a common starting point for an engagement.
No. MAS Research provides research, analytical, advisory, and documentation support. Accreditation decisions are made through the independent EQUIS/EFMD process by EFMD and its peer reviewers. No support provider can guarantee an accreditation outcome, and we do not claim to—nor are we an official EQUIS or EFMD partner or endorser.
Both are respected international business-school accreditations run by different bodies. EQUIS, run by EFMD (Brussels), assesses the whole institution against ten chapters of Standards & Criteria, with a distinctive emphasis on internationalisation and corporate connections. AACSB (US-headquartered) organises its 2020 standards within three constructs and is strongly mission-driven. Many schools pursue both. See our AACSB accreditation support page for that framework.
